Chapter 32

When Russell walked back inside, he found Jayne, Jodie, and Rusty at the kitchen table, Rusty in his high chair and Jayne and Jodie sitting across from each other with questioning looks on their faces.

“What’s wrong, Russell?” Jodie asked.

He poured another cup of coffee. “Not a problem, more a change in scheduling,” he said and kissed the top of Rusty’s head, then sat at the table. He looked down when a text message came in with details of the flights to Vermont.

“Day after tomorrow, you and Jayne and Rusty will fly to Vermont and move into our new houses.”

Jayne and Jodie looked at each other.

“Day after tomorrow?” Jodie asked. “We can’t possibly be ready by then, Russell.”

“Why not?” he asked.

“Well, what about the furniture and the baby things? What about all the clothes in our closets? And what about Jayne with her three girls? How can they possibly get all their things packed in one day?”

“All you need to take with you are the basics, Jodie, things you can get by on for a week at the most. I’ll see to it all of the furniture is packed carefully and delivered safely.”

“But you’re sending us away without you, right? By ourselves?”

“It might feel that way, Jodie,” he said and took a sip of his coffee, “but in all honesty, there will be a group of people following you and Jayne as a means of protection. You’ll be safe.”

“But you won’t be there, will you?” Jodie asked. “You won’t come with us.”

Russell put his hand on hers and leaned closer to her. “I’ll be there within a few days. Just a few days, I promise.”

“Well,” Jodie said and put her hand on the side of his face, “if it’s just a matter of a few days, then I’ll stay here and come back with you. I don’t want to be without you, Russell.”

“That’s not possible,” he said. “Please, trust me on this, Jodie. You need to be as far away from Haden as possible.”

“Why? What’s the rush?” Jodie asked and got up from the table. She stared out the back door window. “I don’t get it.”

Rusty whimpered and held out his arms. Russell took him out of the high chair. “Happy mornin’ to you, big boy,” he said. “How’s Daddy’s boy feeling today?” He walked over to the counter, picked up the fever gun, and pointed it at Rusty. “Well, look at that,” Russell said. “Ninety-nine degrees! I think you’re almost well.” Rusty squirmed and put his hand on Russell’s face.

“You’re right, Russell. He’s made a big improvement.”

“Should I put him on the quilt?”

“You can try,” Jayne said as she sipped the last of her coffee. “But I think he’ll whine because what he wants most is his daddy.”

He took Rusty in his arms. “Let’s walk around, shall we?”

Jodie glared at him from the back door. “Have a good time with your son, Russell, but don’t bother to tell your wife why she has to pack up and move by tomorrow,” she said and slammed the back door as she went out.
